Some members of the wagon train want Bud's family to turn back because they believe the journey is too dangerous, especially with the challenges of the terrain and the potential threats from hostile encounters. They may also feel that Bud's family is a liability, fearing that their presence could slow down the group or lead to additional risks. Additionally, there could be underlying tensions or conflicts within the group that exacerbate their desire to exclude Bud's family from the journey.

I wondered the same thing. I've since read in a couple of sources that Bond broke a hip during the filming of China Doll, with Victor Mature. The film was released in 1958. Since that coincides with the 1958 Wagon Train episodes in which Bond was on crutches, I'm guessing the hip injury was the cause. I have not, however, read a more direct explaination.
