This is an interesting question and has to do with the love/hate relationship that people in families have with nicknames. Some San Franciscans love and use the word Frisco. Some despise the word. Frisco can be used affectionately. Some San Franciscans dislike the familiarity that the nickname suggests, especially when the word is used by outsiders. Does an outsider have the right to use the nickname? Some San Franciscans feel that even insiders should not use the name. The word conjures up the eras and culture of dock workers and gold miners. Is that world a little too rough and tumble for the modern techy scene? At the other end of the formality spectrum, some San Franciscans have a certain reverence for their city, and feel it is a very special place. They often use the words The City to describe San Francisco. The words The City mean San Francisco and no other place on earth to them. This term flourishes in the highbrow world of San Francisco, especially among the older and established families.
