Well, Ponyboy had "stolen their girls" or presumably had conversations with their previous mates. They were jealous.
He didn't apologize (he didn't need to, they were being unfair), so they decided to attack him and his brother.

The other time (the one that ends up in murder) is because he, Johnny and Two-Bit were hanging out with their girlfriends Cherry and Marcia. That was the main reason, it also did not help that Ponyboy insulted them.
