The artist often carries a balancing pole that may be as long as 12 meters (39 feet) and weighs up to 14 kilograms (31 pounds). This pole increases the rotational inertia of the artist, which allows more time to move his or her center of mass back to the desired position directly over the wire. This effect can be magnified by making the pole as long as possible and by weighting its ends. The pole also helps balance the funambulist by lowering the center of gravity. High-wire artists use drooping, rather than rigid, balance poles. It's possible, in fact, to have such heavy weights attached to the ends of a long, drooping pole that the center of gravity of the performer/pole system is below the wire. In this case, the performer would require no more sense of balance than a person hanging from the wire. Check the related links for more info

For balance. When you are walking on a rope, small ledge or ridge, the thing you naturally do is hold out your arms on either side of you. This is the same idea, only this is more effective.

Would it be possible for a tight rope walker to walk on a rope with the rope being completely straight?

If the rope is horizontal, then it would not be possible for a tight rope walker to walk on the rope with the rope being completely straight. No amount of tension in a perfectly straight rope can support any amount of weight that is exactly perpendicular to it. But don't worry. If the rope itself has any weight, then it's not possible for a horizontal rope to be completely straight, for exactly the same reason.

Is it easier to tight-rope walk or slack-rope walk?

Slack-rope walk. A rope will be under tension and tight if the two ends are elevated so there is no slack, hence a tight-rope. However, leaving the rope unsuspended will result in a slack rope which will not move under foot and can be walked on easily, as the rope is supported by the ground that also offers support to the feet.
