You generate static electricity from brushing against things, or your clothes brushing against you. On humid days, the charge is bled off as fast as it builds up. On dry days, the air is a good insulator- the static charge builds up to the point that you get a "zap" when you touch the metal door, and the charge is grounded. Working with helicopters in Alaska in the winter (VERY dry air) we would see a spark of 2-3 feet long when grounding a helicopter that was hovering.
