Because the earths axis is tilted in relation to the sun, but it keeps the same tilt as it rotates around the sun. That way both north and south hemispheres have an equal chance to directly face the sun.

∙ 14y agoDay and night is caused by the rotation of the planet Earth. Only one side of the planet can be shined on by the Sun at the same time. The side that the Sun is shining in is in day, while the side that isn't is in night.
The seasons are caused by the fact that the Earth doesn't rotate in the same direction that it orbits the Sun. This means that during different times in its orbit, either the Northern or Southern Hemisphere will be closer to the Sun. This difference creates the different seasons, with Summer being the time when your hemisphere is closest to the Sun, and Winter being the time when it is furthest.
