The activation code is there to make sure that you have purchased the game. An activation code can normally only be used once and is checked against a database of activation codes, once it has checked that the code is valid (is an official code and has not been used before) it informs the database that the code has been used. When the game is uninstalled the database is informed so that you can reinstall the game on another computer.
