The movies that play in theaters are new releases. You can't watch them at home.
Occasionally old movies have a special run at theaters, so people can experience them on a really huge screen. But these film revivals are a lot less popular nowadays, because, as you said, people can just watch the movies at home, for a fraction of the price of a movie ticket.
Although, these days you don't really have to wait as long for a movie to come out on DVD. Before DVDs were invented, movies didn't come out on VHS tapes for sale or rent until at least a year after they were in theatres. That's a really long time to wait to see a movie. But nowadays, a movie stops playing at theatres, and then like, three months later it's out on DVD.
I definitely find myself going to the movies a lot less because of that. Usually I only go to the movies now if it's a movie I'm just dying to see, and I cannot possibly wait three or four months for the DVD. And no matter how big your TV screen is, it's never going to be as big as a movie theater screen, especially an IMAX screen.
