When John Thornton goes to his mine he is abducted by Indians and later killed by them and then buck goes and kills all the Indians making him even more wild than he already was
Jack London lets John Thornton die so that Buck can fully tap into his instincts and answer his "Call of the Wild." without thornton dieing Buck wouldn't let himself be completely devoted to the wilderness even though he had become so attached to it because of the companionship that the two shared. In other words, even though it was an unfortunate event without it, the book really would've been quite pointless.
