∙ 13y agoIf they kept running away they would just get in more trouble than if they just turned them selves in.
More specifically they did so in order to claim self-defense in Johnny's killing of a Socials gang member named Bob Sheldon. Johnny knew that if he stayed on the run, the other Greasers would still be scrutinized by the police, and Ponyboy wouldn't have a chance to succeed in life. Johnny was willing to face the consequences in order to continue protecting his friends.
