Funding, mostly with the whole economic crisis and that, it is hard to convince people that we need to spend billions to get us to Mars. That and being stuck in a small, metal tube with the same people for five years compounded by the constant threat of death has had the tendency to drive said potential astronauts mad.

Who are the astronauts that went to Mars?

Nobody has ever set foot on Mars. The ONLY body outside of Earth thatanyone has ever stepped on is the Moon. Between 1969 and 1972, twelve (12)men landed on the moon, got out, and walked on it. It's been 42 years since thelast one. The nearest that Mars can ever get to Earth is about 190 times fartherthan the moon.
