While Siddhartha was meditating in his quest for enlightenment the demon Mara appeared and tried to distract and tempt him but he resisted The Temptations. Ultimately he touched the earth under the bodhi-tree and called upon her, the earth, to testify that he deserved to be left alone, based on his previous good deeds. The earth granted that to him and he reached enlightenment becoming the Buddha.

∙ 10y agoTwo thoughts that might be useful. Not all Buddhist traditions would necessarily work on the basis that there are different Buddhas. Secondly sometimes the same Buddha can be dipicted with different hand positions (mudras).
Bear in mind that different Buddhist traditions may not share one common view, I speak from my own point of view which has its roots in the Tibetan/European traditions.
So much for clarification. Hand gestures can be seen in isolation or as part of the whole appearance of the Buddha, each hand postion has it's own significance as does the posture as a whole. For example it is relevant if a Buddha is sitting, standing or has legs crossed.
The Mudra may be used to emphasise a particular quality. But given that the Buddha has reached a state of enlightenment and has all qualities the mudra is a way of understanding and drawing out our own qualities. Hope this is a useful starting point.
