Elphaba is the phonetic pronounciation (el-pha-ba) of L.F.B., which are the initials of Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 - May 5, 1919), original creator of the Oz book series.

Specifically, Elphaba's first name, and her last name of Thropp, were given to her by Gregory Maguire (b. June 9, 1954). Baum had left her nameless, other than the title of Wicked Witch of the West. Maguire changed all that, in 1995, with his novel "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West."

The Musical: When Elphaba goes to the Wizard, he offers to make her great by working with him, which was her dream. She performs some magic for him, giving monkeys wings. She finds out that the Wizard is the one behind all of the Animal attacks, and proceeds to run from him with the Grimmerie, an ancient spellbook. She enchants a broomstick to fly and goes off to work against the Wizard. Thus, she is deemed Wicked. She accepts this during the song "No Good Deed" when she realizes that no good deed goes unpunished. She tried to help Fiyero, and he seemingly died, she tried to help Doctor Dillamond, and his speech was taken away, and she tried to help Nessa, only to have a house fall on her.

The Book: Elphaba is considered Wicked because she is a Witch and is capable of magic, as well as the fact that she murdered Madame Morrible with a trophy and had an affair with an already married Fiyero, causing him to be killed by the Gale Force for fraternizing with her.

What was the wicked witch's name in Wicked?

In Wicked there are really not any wicked witches, just misunderstood girls with magical powers. Elphaba is a college student who was born green and was loved by no one. Because of this, she was considered misunderstood. Being misunderstood and unloved gave her a bitter feeling and she became the Wicked Witch of the West. The Wicked Witch of the East is Elphaba's younger sister who was once paralyzed. Her name is Nessarose. She becomes wicked in an act of selfishness in trying to save her boyfriend from death. None of the typical witches are wicked. The wicked witch of the west is Elphaba is just missunderstood and that's what the whole musical is about. Then there is Nessarose who is Elphaba's sister but she is seen as the wicked witch of the east because she made a selfish descision to keep her love. Then of course there is Glinda, who isn't really Wicked but very selfish sometimes and a little bit self-centered.
