The release of magma along the Great Rift Valley began volcanic eruptions between 2 and 3 million years ago. The three separate summits of Kilimanjaro represent the overlapping releases that formed the mountain. Two of the peaks are considered extinct, and the third has been dormant for about 360,000 years.

Mount Kilimanjaro is famous as the highest peak in Africa and perhaps what makes its snow-capped summit all the more impressive is that it stands alone, towering almost 6,000m above the surrounding plains. A trek up Kili is an exhilarating, beautiful and challenging experience and your reward, of watching the sunrise from the top of Africa's highest mountain, is breathtaking. In ''The Snows of Kilimanjaro,'' Ernest Hemingway presents the story of a writer at the end of his life. While on a safari in Africa, Harry, the protagonist, is scratched on the leg by a thorn, and the infection becomes gangrenous and eventually kills him. Repeated eruptions that began around 2 to 3 million years ago built up consecutive peaks at Mount Kilimanjaro, which has three separate summits (two considered extinct). The latest eruption was about 360,000 years ago, but except for releases of gas and steam, the volcano has been dormant since then.
