Why is Tobey Maguire not playing Spider-Man in the fourth movie?

Because he said he would only be in "Spider-Man 4" if it was directed by Sam Raimi just like the other three movies. But Raimi pulled out of directing it when the producers rejected his ideas- so Maguire decided he was through playing the character forever. With both of them gone- Sony decided the original series was over and it was time to begin a new series.
