With the CW ordering all their shows to cut costs, producers ultimately failed to reach a deal, meaning that Lucas and Peyton's last appearance will be on the season finale next week. They will be replaced by two new characters next season and, in addition, Austin Nichols (Julian) is being promoted to series regular.

Although Murray had plenty to say when reports first surfaced, the actor is remaining quiet now that his exit is official.
