Honestly, I don't think it's just one thing in general that is the problem. But yes, illiteracy is a huge part of it. When a young Muslim (not only Muslim, I'm sure there may be others as well but this is just an ex. ) boy is recruited to become a terrorist, they tell him that he's doing the right thing in the name of Allah. They don't give him a chance to become literate for if he was, he would would know he is not doing the right thing. Without knowledge of what he is doing, the boy is easily brainwashed by these people.
Illiteracy is also a large but not the only cause of poverty, in my opinion. People don't have the money to give their kids a proper education who subsequently end up just as poor, if not more, than their poor parents. In this way, poverty continues and will do so until kids are given a proper education so they can do something that pays well, earn money, land end their poverty.
