its not as offensive as it is just plain dirty, rude or crude to use. don't get me wrong, you can still offend somebody with the word though. its like using any other cuss word, its just kinda dirty and bad in general

It is a very long standing historical tradition that when matters of sexuality are expressed in a vernacular term rather than by use of a clinical, scientific term, the intention is to violate social taboos and shock people. So, people are duly shocked. It's not as shocking as it once was, however. Comedians, musicians, dramatists have insisted upon using such words, and we are getting used to them.
