It is one of the very few modern (?) fairy type tales- actually supernatural elements are held to a minimum- there are no talking animals, for example that deals with basically down beat topics- poverty, possible child abuse, and breaks all of the canons of modern juvenile fiction by killing off the lead- and female juv enile character! There is no real bad guy- except maybe society as a whole- Ho Ho Ho and ignoring cries for help. It is heavy going and not surprisingly unpopular. It was done as a cartoon ( rarity- sad cartoon) - but not to my knowledge a conventional motion picture. The death of a child was always a very sensitive plot element rarely used- and possibly banned, certainly discouraged, by the Production Codes. Does that answer your question! the death of an animal was Black Chords enough (e.g. Old Yeller, some versions of Toby Tyler- where the monkey died) but a child.. that is sensitive stuff.
