At the time this question was asked, Sony had suffered a security breach and thousands of customers' data was compromised. As part of their security measures, Sony closed the PSN to prevent further intrusion while they examined the breach.

∙ 13y agoSome people hacked it and stole about 8-10 accounts and to stop them getting any more then playstation shut down the network and they have found out how it got hacked and stopping it from happening again

Service was restored to most users on May 14, 2011 after the outage of April 20, 2011. Users were required to reset their passwords and download new software to connect to the network.
