It grows well there. Ok soil, flat land, lots of water. LOTS of space. It's just too cold and too short of a growing season for the sorts of crops that you find further south such as corn or fruit. Grasses (and by extension grains) are what you can grow in the short time that is available that is hardy enough to deal with early and late frosts.
