There was first the most obvious reason which is that no one has a right to enslave anyone else. The other reason is that any country that hopes to be able to compete in a market where it competitors have given up slavery itself has to give it up. The reason for this is that if a country depends on slavery to make its product it will never have the people that are able to develop its industry. this would be largely because you can only make a slave do what you want him to. you cant make him go out of his way to improve your methods and give you a competitive advantage. this was the main reason slavery was abolished in the USA. it had very little to do with the Ideal that slavery was wrong. as a matter of fact slavery was not totaly abolished until years after the civil war in the US was won by the north.
I don't suppose you would fancy being dragged out of your home, carried in appaling conditions to a distant country, then being made to work very hard and flogged if you don't work hard.
