The Earth's orbit around the sun isn't exactly an orbit that could be named circular. It is rather an elliptical, and therefore the orbit is more of an oval shape. When, in it's orbit, the earth is closer to the sun, the season will tend to go by faster. (Vice Versa).

Is the length of the day the factor that governs the seasons?

The length of the day is not the reason but is a result of the season. The reason for seasons to take place is the inequality of distance between sun and earth with time. We all know that earth rotates around sun. But it won't rotate in a perfect circular path. The orbit of earth is an oval in shape. Hence, some times it will be closer to sun and some times farther. When it is closer, most of the area on earth is covered by sun. Hence, we have more day time (or length of the day) during summer. In a similar manner, as less area is covered by sun, the length of the day is less in winter.

A polygon with all right angles and all sides unequal in length?

All sides unequal in length? You're not going to get this in planar geometry. You might get it in spherical, but you cannot get a flat shape to have all the same angle, yet have all unequal sides. It's not going to happen. â–
