To put it in the simplest terms, they were simply two warriors in opposing armies who met up and did what came naturally to them as warriors: they fought. However, Achilles had a grudge against Hector, since the latter killed the former's cousin, Patroclus.

The fight was short, and after Achilles defeated Hector by breaking his neck, proceeded to drag his corpse around the battlefield before letting the Trojans reclaim his body.

Interestingly, Achilles was killed a short time later by Paris (Hector's brother), who shot him in the ankle with an arrow (thus giving the Achilles tendon its name).

After the Trojan offensive on the Greek encampment failed, Achilles lead the counterattack against the Trojans who quickly retreated. Athena disguised herself as Hector's brother, Deiphobus, and convinced Hector that they could fight Achilles together. However, the Olympians took sides in the Trojan War and as Achilles neared Athena disappeared and Hector realised he had been tricked and was defeated.

There was a war, you know! Achilles was Greek, Hector was Trojan. So... ---- Well, yes, of course there was a war. But there was more to it than that. Achilles had a cousin, Patroclus, who went to battle in Achilles' armour so that the Achaeans would think Achilles still fought with them; in actuality, he was sulking near the ships, as was his wont. When Patroclus went into the fray, Hector killed him, thinking he was Achilles. Achilles was not happy with this, so he challenged Hector to single combat. Like any sensible human being, Hector thought better of it before he actually reached Achilles, and so he started back for Troy. Achilles killed him with a well-aimed spear.

Achilles fought on the side of the Achaens and Hector fought on the side of the Trojans during the Trojan war. Achilles was automatically enemies with the Prince of Troy. It was considered that Achilles and Hector were the best warriors in the war. Hector accidentally killed Achilles cousin Patroclus, who dressed as Achilles in order to prove himself. Achilles then took revenge on Hector and killed him. After, he tied Hectors corpse to a chariot and dragged him back to the Achaens camp. This was seen as sacrilege by both sides as it was believed that every man should receive funeral rites.

Compare and contrast hector and Achilles?

Hector was a Spartan, Achilles fought for the Trojans...Wrong!!! Hector was a Trojan. The best Trojan in fact.

What is the significance of the armor Hector wears while fighting Achilles?

The armor that Hector wore used to belong to Achilles. Achilles had refused to fight because of a dispute he had with Agamemnon so he let his friend Patroclus wear his special golden armor to raise the moral of the Greek troops. But Hector, thinking that the guy in the armor was Achilles, killed Patroclus and took the armor. So Achilles fights Hector for revenge for his friend and spots Hector since he's wearing the golden armor.

Whose body does Achilles abuse and defile?

Hector's. In the early part of the Iliad, Achilles has a dispute with Agamemnon (commander in chief of the Greek army) and refuses to continue fighting. While Achilles is sulking in his tent, Achilles' best friend Patroclus is killed by Hector. Achilles rejoins the assault, kills Hector in retaliation, and then drags the dead body around the city behind his chariot. Perhaps Achilles does this from pure rage, or perhaps he is undoing Hector's magical protection of Troy. Homer leaves it open in the poem.

What does hector ask Achilles to promise him before they fight once and for all?

In The Iliad, Book 22, Hector tells Achilles that should he (Hector) be victorious in their battle he will return Achilles' body to Greece and asks that should he die at Achilles' hand, Achilles should return Hector's body to Troy. Achilles refuses.

Achilles refuses to bury Hector because?

Hector has killed Patroclus, Achilles' best friend.
