Just before the 79th Academy Awards in 2007, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ruled that only one producer (Graham King) would be eligible to win the 2006 Best Picture Oscar for "The Departed." The ruling eliminated producers Brad Pitt and Brad Grey from accepting awards.

In 2000, the Academy adopted stringent rules limiting the number of officially credited producers to three. In the case of "The Departed," King's participation was considered to be more instrumental to the film that the other producers.
