Dorothy Day [November 8, 1897-November 29, 1980] and Peter Maurin [May 9, 1877-May 15, 1949] founded the Catholic Worker movement. The movement was organized, for direct aid to the homeless and the poor, and for nonviolent action in their support and on their behalf. The CWN is considered as having begun with the Catholic Worker newspaper of the 1930s. The paper's support of nonviolent means to social action led to the establishment of a hospitality house in the New York City slums, and to farms for communal life and work. By the 1940s, more than 30 such affiliate communities were operating independently in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. Nowadays, there are more than 100 such communities what with the movement having spread to Australia, Germany, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, and Sweden. Day received much recognition from the Roman Catholic Church for her activities, in support of peace and nonviolent social change. For example, she received the Pacem in Terris Award in 1971, for her good will support of world peace; and the Laetare Medal in 1972, from the University of Notre Dame, for having "ennobled the artts and sciences, illustrated the ideals of the church and enriched the heritage of humanity." With her death, she is under consideration for sainthood.
