Officially, Firefly was cancelled by FOX due to low ratings. Fans however point out that the series was promoted incorrectly as a action-comedy than a Science Fiction drama. The series was shown out-of-sequence; the original two-hour pilot for instance wasn't aired until near the end of its run. Episodes were pre-empted by the network's sporting events. After the series was cancelled, Joss Whedon tried to have another network pick it up. When that failed, he then tried to pitch it as a film. That film later became Serenity, which was released in 2005.
In the years that followed, the show has had a steadily growing fanbase, and continues to grow to this day.

Of course not. FOX is a TV Network whose sole purpose is to make money from their TV shows. If a TV show is not producing ratings then the network is not making ad revenue. Networks don't care 'about' the shows they make and air, just that people watch them and if they don't attract viewers they get cancelled. Networks don't feel bad about cancelling shows. Having said that, they are appealing to the cult fanbase they know Firefly had (& has) by making a tenth anniversary special.
Many of the actors from Firefly went on to do other successful projects. Nathan Fillion currently stars in the ABC series Castle. Gina Torres stars in the series Suits. Alan Tudyk starred in Suburgatory. Morena Baccarin stars in the HBO series Homeland. Adam Baldwin stars in The Last Ship.
