New Zealand's highest mountain was originally named Mt Cook by Captain John Lort Stokes in honour of James Cook, who was the first European to circumnavigate New Zealand in 1770, though he did not sight the mountain.
Mt Cook's indigenous name is Aorangi, or Aoraki, which means "Cloud Piercer" in the NgÄi Tahu dialect of the MÄori language.
There are two Mt Cook's that I know of. The first is roughly one-half the way up the Southern Alps, and also has the Maori name Aoraki. The other one is adjacent to the CBD in Wellington, and is the prime reference for Surveying in New Zealand. It is juts inside the foyer of the old Dominion Museum in Buckle Street.
Aoraki Mt Cook is 3,754 metres (12,316 ft) high. (It lost 10m in height in a landslide in 1991.) It is situated on the South Island in the Southern Alps Mountain Range
New Zealand has 14 National Parks: Abel Tasman, Aoraki Mt Cook, Arthur's Pass, Egmont, Fiordland, Kahurangi, Mt Aspiring, Nelson Lakes, Paparoa, Rakiura, Tongariro, Te Urewera, Westland, Whanganui.
The tallest NZ mountain is Mt. Cook. It is named after Captain Cook. It has two official names; the other is Aoraki.
Aoraki/Mt Cook actually lies on an outlier range from the Southern Alps in Canterbury, and somewhat west of Christchurch.
