The bear does not really "stand" for anything in the traditional Navajo religion. There are bears in some traditional stories and a clan and a mountain that has the bear (or it's spirit) as a protector but the bear is not really a big part of traditional belief. It is important in one ceremony, the Mountain Way chant. Hunting bear or eating it is considered taboo. Traditional Navajo do not wear bear claws or parts.
Ayla is the heroine in the book The Clan of the Cave Bear.

The cave bear is important to the Clan because he taught their ancestors to live in caves, which protect the Clan from predators and the elements. They worship the cave bear as a special ancestor. When Ayla found the cave that the Clan moved to after the earthquake, Creb found a cave bear skull, and the Clan took it as a sign that the Great Cave Bear (who they always referred to as Ursus, because calling him plain old "bear" was sacrilege) himself wanted them to live there.
