The Ku Klux Klan formed during the reconstruction era. They were formed for the purpose of resisting Northern occupation and the anti-south Republican Party of the time. It was not originally a specifically racist organization, but by coincidence a lot of it's violence was directed towards blacks because they were the majority the of anti-south republicans at the time. It's later incarnations of the 20's and 60's are more widely recognized as the racial hate group they are known to be today.

Shortly after the civil war confederate soldiers were upset that they had just lost a war, had to live without slaves, and now were competing against the blacks in the job market. The blacks were very superstitious and the soldiers dressed themselves in sheets, so as to appear as ghosts. It acctually started as a few guys blowing off some steam, doing a prank. It obviously turned into much more. They rode around one night scaring any blacks they saw. The news soon spread, and the KKK grew in size and violence.

The group was politically important because it denied Blacks and Republicans the right to vote and exercise many of their civil rights. The Klan was able to create one-party rule throughout the South that lasted for about 100 years.

The Klan was the product of white racism combined with a hatred of the Republican Party. In December of 1865 a small group of Confederate veterans met in Tennessee in a law office. These were the founders of the Ku Klux Klan who claimed they were a social society. They retained this claim although from the outset its goal was to intimidate former slaves and white sympathizers. Within a few months, in 1867 they were a full fledged terror organization. This then was their goal and the reason that they formed and recruited members.
