The shortest route between two points is a straight line. But since the Earth is round (try bending a ruler along the surface of a Basketball or something), the shortest route between two points on a globe will look like a curve when seen o a flat map.

And since people wanted Titanic to cross the Atlantic as fast as possible, the shortest route possible is also the most northern route, and she ended up in iceberg territory.
