Dally didn't really ever love anything as much Johnny, and when Johnny died, Dallas didn't want to live without him, so he wanted to die and he did and Pony knew it.

Dally was so consumed with grief by Johnny's death and that he believed that death was the answer Dally wanted to die and he was using the store owner and the cops to help him achieve that. So that is why he pulled his gun out even though he knew that there was no bullets inside the chamber
