you press down the button beside the disc player and wait until you here a beep then its turned off or just turn it off from the back but never leave the game in there!!! more chances you will get the yellow light.

If you know that an update is needed, you can turn it on, update the playstation, then turn it off. If the playstation is not downloading the update or applying the update it can be turned off. An update can't even be started without the user explicitly starting the update. Depending on your internet speed, updates can be fast (< 5 mins) or slow (hours).

Not really. It is better to set the Playstation for auto turn off. Any electrical component is better off when not needed and leaving the PS3 on serves no useful purpose.
