From a publishing standpoint if the hardcover is selling well enough, there is no need to lose money with a paperback edition. Take Eclipse for example. The hardcover edition came out August 2007. The paperback edition is coming out in May or June of 2009 - that's roughly 1 year, 9 months. All said and done, you could be waiting another year or more at this point. Because the movie has increased exposure and *everyone* wants it, they are buying the hardcover despite the $22.99 price tag, giving Little, Brown (Mrs. Meyer's publisher) less of an incentive to publish in paperback. My advice: if you are a fan don't wait for paperback, it will be a while. If you can't afford the cost, ask for it as a gift :)
