I suppose it wouldn't have been a common occurance, but I wouldn't label it impossible. When wind hits sails -- especially a strong gust -- it can easily haul a man or maybe even two or three right off his or their feet. I have personally watched a fellow get dragged right across the stern of a small tall ship when the wind grabbed the sail and caught him off guard. In order for someone to end up upsidedown, he would have to get his foot somehow wrapped in the line that was attached to the sail that got grabbed by the wind. It would have to be securely wrapped, too. And, it would have to be one of the lines that is attached to a tackle aloft somewhere ... so, I suppose it is possible for it to happen, but not entirely likely.
