Des Moines, Iowa lies in the middle of the Heartland of America. It is in the middle of the state, and is the capitol city of Iowa. The capitol used to be located in the eastern part of the state in Iowa City, but was moved to Des Moines due to its conveniently central location.

There are many fun things to do in Des Moines. Topping the list would have to be the world-class Des Moines Botanical Center. It is a 14 acre domed building that has over 1000 varieties of plants inside of it.

Along with viewing plants, you should make a visit to the Blank Park Zoo while you are in town. It has a wide variety of exotic animals, and it is constantly bringing in new attractions to impress its visitors.

While in town, be sure to check out the Des Moines Arts Center. It has a world famous art collection, including works by Georgia O'Keefe, Henri Matisse, and Edward Hopper. The museum mostly holds works from the 19th and 20th centuries.

After touring the Arts Center, make time to explore the Science Center of Iowa, which is located nearby. It is a great place to visit with children, and it has a very nice IMAX dome theatre.

Also located near the Arts Center and Science Center is the State Capitol Building. It is beautiful building that offers free tours!

If you visit Des Moines during the summer, you should give Adventureland a visit. Adventureland is an amusement park that has many fun-filled rides and attractions at a reasonable price.

Perhaps the greatest attraction Des Moines has to offer also occurs during the summer: the Iowa State Fair. Known as the "Granddaddy of them All," the Iowa State Fair is the most famous state fair of them all. It has a plethora of activities and exhibits, and it takes place for a couple of weeks every August.

The downtown of Des Moines is filled with a great nightlife full of live music and delicious food. Some recommendations include: 801 Steak & Chop House, Court Avenue Restaurant & Brewing Company, Splash Raw Oyster Bar, and Old Market Spaghetti Works.

Des Moines has plenty to do and see, and it is very easy to get around Des Moines. Renting a car is the way to go, because the mass transit system leaves something to be desired. It is a great place to explore.
