We skipped the light fandango

turned cartwheels 'cross the floor

I was feeling kinda seasick

but the crowd called out for more

The room was humming harder

as the ceiling flew away

When we called out for another drink

the waiter brought a tray And so it was that later

as the miller told his tale

that her face, at first just ghostly,

turned a whiter shade of pale She said, 'There is no reason

and the truth is plain to see.'

But I wandered through my playing cards

and would not let her be

one of sixteen vestal virgins

who were leaving for the coast

and although my eyes were open

they might have just as well've been closedAnd so it was that later

as the miller told his tale

that her face, at first just ghostly,

turned a whiter shade of pale

The obvious answer is this is a (shock) song based on the Titanic disaster . The man who is the narrator and his female companion do not realize until late in the song they are still in a ballroom- but on the other Side. At any rate some sort of shipwreck on a passenger- possibly a gambling ship ( I wandered through my playing cards,, would not let it be..)

A Whiter Shade of Pale

By Procol Harum

We skipped a light fandango,

Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor.

I was feeling kind of seasick,

But the crowd called out for more.

The room was humming harder,

As the ceiling flew away.

When we called out for another drink,

The waiter brought a tray.

And so it was that later,

As the miller told his tale,

That her face at first just ghostly,

Turned a whiter shade of pale.

She said there is no reason,

And the truth is plain to see

That I wandered through my playing cards,

And would not let her be

One of sixteen vestal virgins

Who were leaving for the coast.

And although my eyes were open,

They might just as well have been closed.

And so it was later,

As the miller told his tale,

That her face at first just ghostly,

Turned a whiter shade of pale.

it is Whiter shade of Pale- and the group is the Procul Harum- spell it right- it means beyond these things- not Arabic Dancing Girls ensemble! Title is derived from Latin. again it"s Procul Harum-not Harem.

The song Whiter Shade of Pale is commonly confused for "lighter" so if you're referring to that song, it was performed by Procol Harum, Annie Lennox, Elliot Yamin, Zakk Wylde.
