Yes, according to a rolling stone magazine article that was written about the song at the time. Besides, one of the verses, "When they put her down", implies it's about a dog. Many other people on different forums have confirmed it. Still a beautiful song nontheless. That was one hell of a dog! I love the song so much I'm missing that dam dog myself!
