It depends, there are many different ways to sing badly. Some people sing through their nose, some people sing in their throat, some people sing breathy, and some people just sing off pitch. But the good news is, improving one area helps the other. The most important thing is confidence. If you sing like you're embarassed, people can tell, and you also probably hold back your full potential. For example, look at William Hung. He sucks. But he became famous because he was so confident. Sing from your stomach. Almost like a cough. You're not going to eject the notes out, but your stomach should contract every time you sing. Try sitting exhaling with nothing but the push from your stomach. The largest problem people have is singing through their throat. This sounds strained and less full, because it is strained and less full. This also solves the "breathy" problem. Next, sing through your mouth, not your nose. You can tell if you're singing too much through your nose by just singing "aaaah" or something simple, then clamp you nostrils shut.
