Of course he could. There are social disadvantages I would think as usually the Flute is considered girly. However, some of the best flute players are male. i am a 16 year old girl that plays flute- i wouldn't be bothered if there was a boy there especially if he was good looking lol
The first band James Galway played in was a melody flute band in Belfast, Northern ireland named the 39th Old Boys.
The role of the flute in a band is an important one, and is present in all marching bands. They are used to give higher pitches for the ensemble, and it is also easier for flute players to do a complicated run than for other brass instruments.
I believe it's just an instrumental song her band created for the show. But, her messing up on the flute is part of the show. It's a joke. For all 126 shows she pretended to play the flute & purposely "forgot" to play the final "flute solo."
To play a high natural a on the flute, use the thumb and middle finger of your left hand, and the middle finger and little finger of your right hand. You'll need a lot of breath support, but careful not to "blast" it.
In a band or woodwind ensemble, flute 1 and flute 2 are simply parts you play. Typically flute one will have more parts, or higher notes. Flute 2 will have less parts, or lower notes. THey have these so there's some harmony in the piece you are playing.

Although I am not aware on how the middle school band program works; I do know that in my side of town; there is a high school honors band, in which I am trying out for (I am also a flutist myself). It takes some middle school band experience, and an audition that features a piece of music that looks hard to play (the notes look all closely spaced; and you never know how fast you're supposed to play it). But in order to get in; you should basically work hard and try your very best!
First, learn to play the flute. Second, get the sheet music for the song. Third, get someone to transcribe the music into your flutes key. And last, play the song.
No, the piano has a much larger range than the flute. Both are in the same key, but you'd have to transpose everything below middle c and the flute can't play chords.
