Here is an experience I just had. I left the band, Coldplay, playing on a loop on my stereo very softly. I had a dream that I was in a room and I hear water dripping, as if the drops where hitting drywall (a thud sound). It was very constant and I remember tapping my fingers to the beat on a bed (I am a percussionist and drum set player). When I awoke, It took me a few seconds to realize what had happened. Also, the song that was playing when I woke up had a very distinct snare sound. A soft and low thud, at a tempo of about 50 beats per minute. I recognized it as the water dropping from my dream almost immediately.
This is the only experience that I can think of or remember. It is obvious that sound in music can affect a dream, but what about lyrics?

For others, hearing music (of any sort) may prevent them from being able to fall asleep or to get to the point of REM sleep. For those who dream, it may have an impact on their dreams.

It is normal for dreams to reflect your interests. If you listen to gospel music throughout the day, it would be natural for the same music to fill your dreams. On the other hand, if you dislike gospel music or find primitive Christianity distasteful, then the music in your dreams might suggest a similar distaste for something happening in your real life at this present moment.
