Music critics are paid to listen and write reports about performances. But for a casual listener to be paid without having to do anything but listen is hardly likely.

Yes, despite what many think. The payment is necessary to provide a living for those who make it (the artists, the producers, the record company, ...) and to pay for the actual materials used to make and record it. However, the prices are probably a bit too high and this is why many feel cheated of their money.
