well it depends on it you are writing you own song or not. I write my own songs and sometimes i will change the melody in the verse's. Most of the time, it just depends on who the person is and what the person wants.

Every song is different. There are songs with as few as 2 chords (Miles Davis's So what is Em and Dm but there is a lot of model melody in there) and there are songs with 100s of chords.
