You can buy a receiver to listen to them with, but you can't transmit to them.

The receiver you want is one that's advertised as a "scanner". And then, you

have to program it to the frequencies used by the first responders in your area.

I can't help you there.

Some things to be aware of:

-- When first responders are communicating with their dispatcher or with each other,

they usually do not transmit and receive on the same frequency. So, unless you're

really handy with your scanner, you'll only hear one side of the conversation.

-- If the first responders in your area have replaced their old radio system with

a digital system ... and more and more of them are going that way ... then you

might as well forget about it. Your scanner will not help you make out anything

that's being transmitted digitally. It'll only sound like buzzy noise.

If the radio in a 94 Dodge Spirit goes out but the dome light still works is it just because the radio is broken or could it be an electrical problem?

The circuits have nothing in common. The dome light works whether or not the key is on, the radio only works with the key on.

What properties make radio waves good for communicating?

The really nice thing about radio waves is that they will make the electrons in a piece of copper wire move; this means that they generate electric currents in the wire. In fact it works both ways: alternating currents in a copper wire generate electromagnetic waves, and electromagnetic waves generate alternating currents. The electric currents at "radio frequencies" (rf) are used by radio and television transmitters and receivers. I use frequencies of 145MHz (VHF), 14MHz (20m HF) and 3.7MHz (80m HF).

What does a radio convert radio waves into?

The radio converts EM waves through the Transmitter/Receiver. This works because if you pass a magnet over a wire it creates a small electric charge, all EM frequencies do the same so the T/R basically converts the pattern into a easily recognisable form such as voice.

You get no sound from radio and scans constantly have swapped radios 2 other Taurus and your radio works in other car you get the same results with the swapped radio?

Your antenna lead-in is broken, and the radio isn't getting any signal. That's why it keeps scanning and can't hear anything. Check the connection from the antenna to the cable, and if that's OK, then you'll have to replace the cable from the antenna to the radio. You did connect the antenna to it when you were checking it in the first car, right ? You can quickly test this hypothesis: With a radio in the first car, where no radio works, connect the power, but don't connect the car's antenna to it. Instead, stick the end of a different piece of wire ( 3 to 6 ft long) into the center hole of the antenna connector on the radio, and see if that makes it possible for the radio to start hearing things.

97 Camry - Radio powers up but no sound also it will not lock into frequencies in scan mode what do you suggest?

I recently changed the battery on my 97 Camry. Afterwards the radio had no sound and the display was normal (like it always was), I checked the fuses, and even removed the radio from the dash, as I wanted it to go into the security mode, but it was fine except that I could not get any sound. A few days later during my lunch break at work I was sitting in my car just fooling around with the radio and with the key in the accessory position, I pressed the on off switch in and held it in for about 10 seconds and the radio came on and works perfectly.

What oven works on short electric waves?

Microwaves. actually these are Microwave frequencies rather than Short Wave in, say the amateur radio sense.

How do you select a particular frequency for communication from earth to a sattellite?

There are many frequencies used between Earth and Space. Radio waves travel through space better than they do through the atmosphere. Because of this, the higher frequencies are generally used because they allow higher bandwidths (more information). Amatuer radio operators generally start in the 10 metre band from 29.3 to 29.5 MegaHertz and use various pieces of the radio spectrum up to 248 to 250 GigaHertz. This is just an agreement between them all and has little to do with how well it works. It all works well. The military and other services use other frequencies in between these.

Which equipment works at frequencies greater than 20000hz?

How radio signal works?

Your radio signal works by using its signal to go to a tower and back to your radio (Via antenna).

How does a prism works to separate the colors in white light?

White light has all visible frequencies incorporated in it. A prism refracts different frequencies at different angles so the different frequencies (colors) spread out.

What do you call someone who works on a radio station?

How a triode works as basic amplifier?

A triode works as a basic amplifier by the use of radio waves. The radio waves produce a heat that is amplified.

What causes the radio display on a 2000 maxima to go blank when the headlights are on but the radio still works?

If the dashboard dimmer switch works with the other dash lights, the fault is in the radio unit itself.
