Jim Morrison had a breakdown on stage in New Orleans in December 1970. This was the last live performance by The Doors with Jim Morrison singing. It was not the last performance by "The Doors" nor was it Morrison's last recording session. See the Wikipedia entry on the history of the Doors for a more complete report of 'the end'....
Iggy Pop was originally considered to be Jim Morrison's replacement after his death in 1971, but instead, Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger shared vocal duties on the Doors' next few albums.

Jim Morrison had been asked by the producers of the show to change the word "higher" for "better" in the line "Girl, we couldn't get much higher" from the song 'Light my Fire', which they were to perform that night. Morrison and the rest of the band agreed, but once the producers left, Morrison told the band that he wasn't going to change the words. When it was time for them to perform, Morrison sang the words as they were. Immediately after, the producers and Ed ran back stage furious and told them they were banned from performing on the show ever again.
