Co-written by June Carter and Merle Kilgore.Columbia Records has released credit to this song to June Carter and Merle Kilgore in 1963. In Johnny Cash's ex-wife's autobiography "I Walked the Line" however, Vivian Cash tells that June Carter and Merle Kilgore did not in fact write the song, but John R. Cash actually was responsible for the number 1 hit. She claims Johnny wrote it while high, about an "unmentionable female part." Which ever the real story be, Ring of Fire was a huge hit, and debued on the Billboard charts June 8, 1963, and remained there for 26 weeks, with seven weeks at number 1.
