Hi, all I know is that most of the Lynard Skynard was touring and they were in a plane and the engine gave out so they died in a plane crash but some of the band members I know the drummer didn't go on the plane so he got some friends together and started up Lynard Skynard again. I do not know when though
Note: Lynyrd Skynyrd is not a real person. It's just the name of the band (they got the idea from their high school gym teacher, Leonard Skinner). I repeat, none of the band members in Lynyrd Skynyrd were ever actually named Lynyrd Skynyrd.
The crash happened on 10/20/1977.
The only people that died in the plane crash were the 2 pilots, lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gains, back up singer Cassie Gains, and manager Dean Kilpatrick. Not the whole band.

The band is facing an uncertain future, with the recent death of keyboardist Billy Powell. A Statement is expected within the next few weeks regarding whether or not Lynyrd Skynyrd will continue.
I agree...but we can hear Billy one last time contributing to Kid Rock's "All Summer Long". They are performing in St Augustine Fl soon and I plan to see them. They used to play our high school dances up in Orange Park Fl in the late 60's and early 70's. The Van Zant's have a great musical history, and those lead guitar players are amongest the best ever heard....in my opinion. But Billy was a catalyst in the band, although not an original band member. I managed to meet and talk to him once at the Village Saloon in Orange Park in the late seventies. RIP and Rock on!
Nobody in the band Lynyrd Skynyrd was/is actually named Lynyrd Skynyrd. Rather, the founding members got the name from their much-hated high school gym teacher, Leonard Skinner.
The band got started in 1964, under the name "The Noble Five." The original members were Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, and Gary Rossington. In 1965, Larry Junstrom and Bob Burns joined the band, and they renamed themselves "My Backyard." They finally changed their name to Lynyrd Skynyrd when keyboardist Billy Powell joined the band in 1970.
