When Michael Jackson was seriously in debt, he sold a half interest in The Beatles catalogue to Sony Music. (Michael acquired the catalog by outbidding Paul McCartney) With Michael's death, his half of the catalogue's continuing income will go to his estate, and the other half continues to go to Sony. Paul has given up the idea of buying back the rights to the Beatles early music. Partly as water under the bridge, and partly due to the fact that the 2009 value of the catalog is regarded to be in excess of $1.5 billion.
