He had three children by Marie d'Agoult, but left her for Princess Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, who encouraged him to settle down and tour less. They attempted to get married, but her divorce was incomplete so the marriage did not go through. The disappointment sent Liszt into a very monastic lifestyle.
