Lennon's best boyhood friends were Pete Shotton (who later became Apple Corps' first managing director, and authored a memoir about Lennon), Nigel Whalley (who served as "manager" for the Quarry Men), and Ivan Vaughan (who later introduced Lennon to his schoolmate Paul McCartney).

Lennon wasn't the only member of his class to become famous; his classmates included Jimmy Tarbuck, who went on to be the country's leading stand-up comedian, and Peter Sissons who became a well known TV newsreader.
